Snorkl’s AI feedback helps students grow by evaluating both the accuracy of their response and the quality of their explanation.
Student responses are assessed in two main ways:
Correctness – whether the student’s final answer, claim, or conclusion is accurate.
Explanation Score (0–4) – how complete, clear, and thorough their reasoning or explanation is.
Correctness
Correctness simply refers to whether the student’s final answer is right or wrong.
This applies across all subject areas — whether a student is giving a scientific claim, solving a math problem, explaining a historical event, or interpreting a poem.
For open-ended questions without a single correct answer, Snorkl evaluates how closely the student’s response meets the teacher’s criteria. If the response meets the criteria at least minimally, it will be marked as correct; otherwise, it will be marked as incorrect.

Explanation Score (0–4)
Snorkl also scores the thoroughness and clarity of each student’s explanation.
Here’s how the scale works:
0–1: Not Yet – The response is missing reasoning or is too unclear to evaluate.
2: Fair – Some reasoning is present but key details or connections are missing.
3: Strong – The response is mostly complete and clear, meeting most expectations.
4: Excellent – The explanation is thorough, well-structured, and demonstrates strong understanding.
Snorkl bases this score on the criteria you set when creating or editing an activity, so your expectations define what counts as “excellent.”
How Snorkl Gives Feedback
For every response, Snorkl provides 2–3 pieces of personalized feedback that:
Start by celebrating what the student did well,
Guide them toward improving or clarifying their thinking, and
Sometimes extend their understanding with an extra prompt or question.
This combination ensures that students feel supported and know exactly how to revise or strengthen their work.
Interpreting AI Scores
Snorkl’s scoring system is designed to move past simple right-or-wrong scoring.
Snorkl helps teachers and students focus on the “why” and the understanding behind the response. It celebrates what students can do — even when the answer isn’t perfect — and provides prompts to guide them toward deeper reasoning and clearer explanations.
For example:
A student might be correct and earn a 1 out of 4 if they give the correct answer but show little to no reasoning or explanation.
Another student might incorrect earn a 3 out of 4 if their final answer is incorrect but their explanation shows strong understanding, reasoning, or use of appropriate concepts.
These distinctions help teachers honor both accuracy and process, encouraging students to reflect, revise, and grow.

These scores help teachers quickly identify patterns in student thinking:
Who has the right idea but needs to deepen reasoning.
Who understands the process but missed a small detail.
