Limiting Student Attempts on an Activity

Learn how to limit the number of times students in a class can respond to an activity and manage submission attempts.

Updated today

Teachers can control how many times students are allowed to submit a response to an activity by using the Limit Attempts setting.

This helps set clear expectations for revisions and encourages students to be thoughtful with each submission.

How to Limit Attempts

You can set attempt limits either when assigning an activity or anytime afterward in the activity’s Settings.

  1. Toggle Limit Attempts on.

  2. Choose the maximum number of attempts:

    • Select from the dropdown, or

    • Choose Custom to enter a specific number

  3. Click Save.

Important Notes

  • Attempts can be set from 1 to 50.

  • By default, activities are set to Unlimited Attempts (which allows up to 50 submissions).

  • This setting applies to the each student in the entire class, not individual students.

What Students See

  • Students will be notified when they have 3, 2, and 1 attempt remaining.

  • Once all attempts are used, students can no longer submit additional responses.

Need to Give a Student More Attempts?

If a student needs additional submissions beyond the limit:

  • Increase the attempt limit in the activity's settings, or

  • Delete a previous student response to free up space for another attempt
